Animal rights terrorists have hit a new low.  They detonated fire bombs to burn up fourteen cattle trucks.  Thank goodness no one has been deemed injured but the possibility is there.  This is sad.  If you don't agree, vote at the grocery store.

I really am disturbed by the continual threats to the nation's food supply.  This is particularly disheartening when you think of the possible damage or loss of life that could have been associated with such a rash act.  Unfortunately, there are nuts out there that don't think.

Humane Society for Shelter Pets

Finally an umbrella group for local humane societies and for educating the public on the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  The Humane Society for Shelter Pets' motto is to help local shelters with overpopulation etc.  They also educate the public on the FACT that HSUS is giving less than 1% of the donations recieved to local animal shelters, while using cats in dogs in 85% of their propaganda.  Hmmm...  I think there is some tricky marketing going on here.

Anyway back to HSSP.  They are an organization that is educating people to donate locally if they want to help local shelters and humane societies.  It makes sense in many areas of your life.  The larger the organization- the more overhead, the less money spent on actually doing something.  The smaller the organization, the more focused they are on fixing a local problem.

The real kicker on HSSP- that has makes me somewhat reserved is a Co-director Diana Culp.  She WAS the director of education for HSUS.  Yep, she has flipped over to a lighter side.  Still against puppy mills- not exactly sure what that is but, hey it is the word of the day. 

Pat Parrelli- WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?

Pat Parrelli is a supporter of the Humane Society of the United States. He is one of their spokespeople. When broached with the deeds of HSUS, one of Pat's PR People says- You should talk to HSUS... They say cattle are the last thing on their radar. My first thought- That is good!

My next rambling of thoughts... I bet that is what the people who raise puppies thought too until their livelihood was attacked. But, they are still on the radar? What about roping horses? They have their fingers in many pies... I think they are just going to get to the other animals first and then start in after cattle after they have brainwashed most of the United States.

So what do you do? Write Pat? Tell him your thoughts and feelings about HSUS. Send him sites and cites.

Respect

Enough with the touchy feely stuff! I wanted to talk about respect. I try really hard to respect people, animals and the environment. I think this is what some people get confused with compassion.

I listened to Trent Loos' Rural Route today as he was talking with two vegans. They complained that Trent did not have compassion for the animals he raised. True, maybe not but you do respect them. You respect the hotheaded mother who just gave birth. You respect the ability of an 1100 lb horse to stick your head in the dirt 7 miles from home. You respect the number of miles your dog saves you when working in not too spectacular conditions.

I also respect the choice of the vegans- good on you. But I don't declare my way is better than yours. I don't critize your meal choices or the way you live. So why do they constantly believe they do it better and have more respect or compassion than someone living with them day in day out?

Hoping Nebraska Agriculture is Awake

After a slim margin of victory in Missouri, HSUS has decided to take on a large Agriculture State~ Nebraska. Hopefully, Nebraska Agriculutral Organizations are awake and are starting to educate the urban public early in the game. The Cornhusker who have relatively few urban centers may have a chance compared to California.

However, it would be scary is HSUS was able to get a stronghold in Nebraska one of the largest feedlot states and also a state with a large amount of pork production. The State Farm Bureau chairmen pointed out some interesting facts- Removing farrowing crates would actually be less humane and reduce the quality of life for many sows.

Additionally, many veterinary students were irritated with HSUS suggesting practices that were in opposition of what is backed by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Suggesting that HSUS is overlooking the authority and trying to gain credibility through sensationalism.

Time to unite Nebraska or watch another state get your taxes and businesses.

Another Goofy Group of AR People

Another goofy group of AR people are making their prescense know throughout the United States. THey are known Farm Animal Rights Movement and want to have a world farm animal day.

I am worried. I know they have backers. I know there is people that believe their mission is true but... They have on their web page to protest when mainstream media is at an outbreak of swine flu. DOH!

I don't want someone who isn't smart enough to differentiate the hazards of swine flu and farm animals to be telling others what to do. I don't think people should listen to them but there has been worse "prophets". Jon Marvel for one.

I don't know how to combat against these people. They are spreading malacious lies about my livelihood. You really can't sue them for slander/libel or maybe you could. Are you better off educating the general public so they don't fall into the trap. Maybe a bunch of Animal Science PhD's could get together and start a group- call themselves Dr.s but not explain that it isn't an M.D. and spread the truth. Hmmm.. Anyone want to chip in for travel expenses? How about some beer money? I am sure after a couple days in the city of educating the general public it will take some medicinal extras to ease the pain. :)
